Pierrette Adams is probably one of the most panafrican female singers. Born
in Congo-Brazzaville, her career took off when she lived in Côte d'Ivoire. Using various popular and dancable
styles, she really sings about injustice, relationships between men and women, and men being unfaithful to their wives.
Although she is shy, her strong voice helps her to bring about the message.
Her social engagement stems maybe from her difficult childhood, on her first album she was inspired by a news item
about a case of child abuse, a delicate subject in Africa as anywhere. Also, she introduced the
« déchirage » fashion,
wearing torn jeans, so that young people with no money for fine cloths could still go to her concerts without feeling
uncomfortable.
For many years she has lived in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, because of her husband's work in that country.
She was soon accepted by the public in that country and her biggest successes date from the period of her life she spent
in Côte d'Ivoire. In September 2002, her husband was assigned to work in Dakar (Senegal) and Pierrette now works
from her new base in Dakar. Due to the political upheaval in Côte d'Ivoire, she had to stop her activities helping
homeless children in Abidjan.
Her 2003 album « Anesthésie » has been well received and has
been quite successful in Africa. Moreover, Pierrette Adams has been nominated for the 2003 Kora All Africa Music Awards.
