Amadou Guitteye "You" grew up in Mopti, where he acquired his nickname You. At the age
of 14, he started being interested in music, much to the dismay of his parents. Following his heart, he took guitar
lessons with
Koko Dembélé, the guitar player of
Orchestre Kanaga.
Three years later, he joined this band that had won several awards at the Biennale du Mali as the Regional Orchestra of
Mopti and brought about other talents such as
Sorry Bamba.
After a period with the
Bama Saba band in Bamako,
You left his country and settled first in
Paris where he played in a band called the Frank Sala Ben Band, now no longer existing. At the end of the 1990s,
he went to Cologne (Germany) where he married and established a family. From Cologne, he started a solo career,
which resulted in two albums thus far.
He mixes the
takamba rhythm from the north of Mali, as well as other music styles from Mali with reggae,
jazz and pop. He works with musicians from Germany, Cuba, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Chili and the USA who form
together his band
Tikabango.
