Hijas del Sol is formed by two singers, Piruchi Apo Botupá and her niece Paloma Loribo Apo,
from the island of Bioko, part of Equatorial Guinea. Their music is based on traditionals of the Bubi population
of the island, but the daughters of the sun (=hijas del sol) went beyond
tradition, resulting in a very lively and enthousiastic performance. Some of the songs are (partly) a capella,
such as the stunning title song of their first album « Sibèba ».
Born in an artistic family, both were already singing before they participated in a festival winning an award for Best Song and for Best Choreography.
In the same year, they went to Spain where they performed at several occasions. Soon, a record deal was signed, and albums
such as « Sibèba » (1995),
« Kottó » (1997), and « Kchaba » (2000) were released.
Hijas del Sol encountered considerable succes in World Music festivals throughout the 1990s. The British World Music magazine Folk Roots (froots)
placed the Hijas del Sol on top of their yearly list in 1995.
Hijas del Sol are no longer together. Paloma 'del Sol' started writing, and she released a first solo album in 2010. Piruchi also started a solo career.
